In 1987, Tim Hanauer began developing time and motion software based on his own work and observations as a landscape estimator and designer. Four years later he had copyrighted and sold his system to a large design-build landscape company in North Carolina, where he was hired as a landscape designer. Tim noticed that the designers, more than anyone else in the organization, controlled the flow of work into the production side of the company. The design department had become a “choke point” much like an hourglass neck. Being a self proclaimed “time study freak”, Tim began to measure and monitor the work habits and patterns of landscape designers in the firm and came to a stunning conclusion. When he added up travel time, missed appointments, phone time, errant site measurements, and numerous other slippages, Tim concluded that the average landscape designer spent only 12 hours actually doing the work of a designer. While the rest of his company had focused on making the work crews more efficient, Tim was busy designing a whole new way of making landscape designers more efficient, thus opening up the “choke point” in the work supply hourglass.
The idea was rejected by the firm as being too “specialized”. A business plan was incubated for 6 months, and a van was designed, purchased, and lettered. While on exhibition in a local home and garden show in Greensboro, North Carolina, the Earth Graphics prototype van and booth appealed to the show participants and Tim was able to sign up 75 landscape design appointments in just 4 days of show!
A computer digital imaging system was added, and after 4 years of refinements and polishing, Earth Graphics was launched as a franchise. Tim, through the efficiencies of the van, was able to double his personal income and increase his personal time with his family!
Two long time friends and co-workers, Denise Wentz and Bobby Suggs, joined with Tim in the creation of the franchise company and have served as evaluators and refiners of the system. Today, Earth Graphics is moving into new markets throughout the Southeastern United States and beyond. The Earth Graphics landscape design and marketing system is now being offered to qualified landscape firms and individual designers as a means of creating greater productivity and income for designers.
